Low Barns Nature Reserve is one of the region’s most important wildlife sites. This wetland reserve, bordered by the River Wear, also contains mixed woodlands and species-rich grasslands.
The Low Barns Coffee Shop is located within the nature reserve’s visitor centre. Open 10am-4pm daily, visitors can enjoy breakfast buns, a selection of light bites, home-made cakes and scones, hot and cold drinks and ice creams.
There is a large indoor dining room, decorated with local photography and traditional tool displays, along with information about the history of the reserve.
There is also an outdoor patio seating area, which enjoys views over Marsten Lake, a haven for wetland birds. Dogs are welcome (inside and outside). Visitors can enjoy a walk around the nature reserve (approximately one mile) on accessible pathways
