Make The Weardale Museum your first port of call in trying to trace your Weardale ancestors !!!
unique and powerful genealogy resource can be found at The Weardale Museum for those interested in researching Weardale Family History.
Its principal feature is a huge genealogical database called 'Weardale People' comprising records of over 60,000 individuals in more than 500 extended Weardale families from the parishes of Stanhope and Wolsingham, covering the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
Running on a commercial genealogy program, the database can rapidly generate comprehensive charts of descendants or ancestors; and, for any individual, can display the associated records - birth/baptism, marriage, death/burial, census data, etc. The resource also includes:
transcripts of Weardale Parish Registers,
censuses in a searchable Excel spreadsheet format,
memorial Inscriptions, fully indexed and easily searchable;
a growing collections of wills, deeds,
newspaper cuttings and
family letters.
first edition OS maps
The Museum wishes to acknowledge all who have contributed and in particular John Backhouse whose transcriptions of census formed the basis for this resource.
The resource is not available on-line but it can be accessed either by visiting the Museum during their opening hours or by contacting Museum staff with an enquiry.
