About 400 million years ago a huge mass of molten rock rose up under what is now   the North Pennines. It cooled and crystallized underground to form Weardale Granite - a hidden but fundamental geological feature.

Frosterley Marble is a unique form of limestone which contains exquisite fossils of an extinct solitary coral and was formed in tropical seas some 325 million years ago.

The Butreeford Disturbance and waterfall attract geologists from around the world

A 320 million year old fossil tree can be found in the market place in Stanhope.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum includes underground tours and an extensive collection of Spar Boxes.
