This heritage railway offers an exciting day out for visitors. Sited at Alston (above the top of the dale) there are a number of locomotives to see – battery, diesel and steam running 5 miles from Alston to Slaggyford on the route of the former British Rail Alston branch line (first opened in 1852). The plans are to completely restore the line and reconnect Alston with Haltwhistle. They operate from Easter to October with a range of special events including ‘Ride and Stride’ and Teddy Bear Special events.

Dogs travel free – you can collect a free souvenir dog ticket from the ticket office – and are welcome in all areas of the site, including the cafes. Bikes are also welcome on the train (subject to space being available) so you can explore further.

The South Tyne Trail permissive footpath runs along the track (fenced off) so families can enjoy a walk – accessible from Alston and Slaggyford stations. Car parking at both stations is free.

Crossings Cafe is at Alston station offering traditional homemade hot and cold food and a range of homemade cakes. The Little Buffet Car is at Slaggyford Station offering a range of drinks, snacks and ice cream.
