Alder Cottage is in Weardale in the North Pennines National Landscape. It is in an old limestone quarry, which is now a Local Wildlife Site with woodland, limestone grassland and ponds and a river. This unique location provides plenty of space to explore on the doorstep and opportunities to engage with the natural environment.

Each season offers something new of interest; spring is the time for birdsong, the arrival of breeding waders and carpets of wild garlic, summer brings a colourful spread of wildflowers to the quarry floor, autumn sees the arrival of the salmon and sea trout to the burn, whilst in winter the quarry provides refuge for roe deer and a hunting ground for barn owl. The quarry is also renowned for its Earth heritage, in particular its exposures of Frosterley Marble and its links to the Frosterley Marble columns in the Chapel of the Nine Altars in Durham Cathedral.

The North Pennines are great for walking and cycling as well as opportunities to explore the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Frosterley is just 25 minutes from Durham City, 50 minutes from Newcastle and is also an ideal base for exploring further afield including Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national parks.

The cottage

Alder Cottage is a timber holiday cottage with a green conscience. It nestles amongst the trees in Harehope Quarry, a Local Wildlife Site. It provides light and airy accommodation all on one level, with an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, king and double bedrooms, a shower room and utility. Externally there is a deck for outdoor dining, a fire pit area and dedicated parking.

The kitchen is well equipped with induction hob and oven, fridge with integral freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The living area has a woodburning stove and TV and the cottage has wifi. There is a washing machine in the utility.

Seasonal fishing is available by prior arrangement with Frosterley Angling Club and the quarry ponds also provides opportunities for wild swimming.
